Thanks to my local Hancock Fabric ladies for giving me a copy of these instructions. It takes soooooooooo much less time then doing it the "old" way. Although, from talking to my mother I guess this way has been around for quite some time too. Anyway! It's time for us younger generation to be equally in the know about binding. Thus my gift to you this Wednesday is time! To do things other than make your own binding for hours.
(Click on it so it's big enough to read.)
OH! and you'll probably want the "how much do I need" guide. So here you go:
Length Width of Bias Tape Needed
Needed 2" 2-1/2" 3"
----------------------------------------------
110" 16" 18" 20"
220" 23" 28" 28"
340" 28" 32" 35"
480" 33" 37" 40"
720" 45"
So if you need 110" of 2" wide bias tape you would cut out a 16" square.
Easy huh? But just so you know, I tend to cut out slightly larger squares. when I go to mark the lines I mark them a little in from the edges. That way your two seams don't converge on one another. The other simple fix to that (if you don't have enough fabric to make it bigger) is to go ahead and make it up through step seven. Before you iron it into double fold (or whatever it is you prefer) you cut out the thick section where the seams intersect and just sew those together the way you normally do to make bias tape. You'll only loose a couple of inches and it's much easier to sew through when you don't have all those layers of fabric PLUS your quilt.
